Fellow Hunters: Do You Want Results Like This On The Hunts You've Always Dreamed Of?

You Can, But You Need To Have 100% Confidence In Your Chosen Hunting Rifle Set-Up

"What Every Hunter Must Know About Firearms And Ballistics Before Spending Another Penny On Guns And Ammo."

Out of all the students we've had here at the Hunting Guns 101, virtually all of them described severe frustration with the poor resources available for information on practical ballistics as well as suitable firearms and ammunition for hunting - and a great number of them demonstrated less than acceptable knowledge of firearms and practical ballistics when tested.

This fundamental knowledge is absolutely critical to success afield, so

Imagine: Every Hunter's Worst Nightmare

STORY: "Frustration, Disbelief, & Sadness Afield"

From: John McAdams
Founder of The Hunting Guns 101 Course

My passion in this life is helping ensure hunters are using the absolute best rifle set-up for their particular circumstances so they can hunt with confidence for any species of big game in the world.

Pursuit of this passion has taken me to the literal ends of the earth hunting big game in places from Arizona to New Zealand to Zimbabwe where I've explored what works and what doesn't work afield in all sorts of conditions.

My "balanced, easy to understand, and straightforward" approach to firearms and ballistics education have become extremely popular in recent years.

But there's a major problem I encounter almost constantly (and at nearly every experience level).

This Problem Is So Common Among Hunters That It's Virtually An Epidemic.

Usually it goes something like this: A new hunter posts something on a hunting forum or on social media asking "What's the best caliber for deer?" (or elk, hogs, bear, etc. just fill in the blank)

Now don't get me wrong, choosing the right cartridge (caliber) for a hunt is extremely important. I also enjoy a good discussion on the pros and cons of various cartridges as much as the next person.

However, it’s far from the only thing that matters.

I call the fascination with cartridge selection:

"Caliber Obsession"

Unfortunately, this fixation on cartridge selection tends to come at the expense of many other, extremely important factors. This obsession with caliber reveals that the information sources most hunters rely on for firearm and ammunition selection are inherently flawed and incomplete.

Like I said earlier, selecting the right cartridge to hunt with is extremely important, but that's just one step in choosing the right firearm set-up for a hunt, NOT THE ENTIRE PROCESS.

Far too many hunters obsess about choosing the right cartridge, but aren’t nearly as diligent in their rifle selection. Many of those same hunters will also use a bargain basement scope and ammunition. The rifle, cartridge, scope, and ammunition are all essential elements in getting properly outfitted for a hunt and must work properly in concert with each other for success.

This is often (but not always) understood by more experienced hunters, but unfortunately doesn't get nearly as much attention as it should from the average hunter.

A lot of more experienced hunters laugh and even criticize those who are newer to the community asking those "best caliber" questions at the shooting range, at gun stores, or online.

But I Don't Laugh. My Own Humble Beginnings (And Many Mistakes) Are Still Very Fresh In My Mind:

The truth is that there's no reason to be embarrassed.

In fact, I asked those same questions and made those same mistakes myself. I still remember vividly how frustrated I was in my early 20s after my first serious elk hunt.

I remember standing there, exhausted after a grueling 7 day hunt in the mountains, in complete shock after blowing a golden opportunity at a very nice bull elk. I'd worked my tail off to get into position, but it all came unraveled when I smacked a tree branch with my rifle barrel as I struggled to get into take aim. That bull vanished into the woods afterwards, never to be seen again...

Like far too many other hunters, I focused on the wrong things and asked the wrong questions as I prepared for my hunt. The end result was that I walked into the woods that fall carrying a rifle completely inappropriate for the situation and I didn't even know it until too late!

That area had plenty of elk and some very nice bulls are taken out of there each year. However, the hard truth was that I very likely cost myself any chance of harvesting an elk that year by using the wrong tool for the job.

It wasn't an one off event either. I actually had excellent opportunities at TWO separate legal bulls on that hunt with similar results each time.

I Certainly Never Would Have Imagined What I Would One Day Be Capable Of... (or what my students would be capable of with the simplest instruction)...

I never would have guessed that one day I would be creator of some of the nation's most popular and highest rated resources on hunting firearms and ammunition.

I never imagined that just 5-10 years after that fateful day on my elk hunt I would pioneer a new method for teaching practical ballistics and firearm selection for hunters - a method that would help so many people achieve the results afield they'd always dreamed of, and always knew they were capable of deep down inside.

A method that would basically eliminate the need to sort through all the confusing (and sometimes misleading or just plain wrong) sources of information on hunting firearms and ammunition out there... and a method that would allow people to fulfill their hunting dreams, regardless of their experience level.

Because here's the thing:

Not 100% Happy With Your Knowledge Of Hunting RIFLES, CARTRIDGES, SCOPES, and AMMUNITION?

HERE'S WHY LACK OF KNOWLEDGE
ON PRACTICAL BALLISTICS
is PROBABLY NOT YOUR FAULT:

I've realized that most hunters have a very incomplete (and often incorrect) understanding of the principles of practical ballistics, or how to translate those principles into actually evaluating, selecting, and effectively using appropriate firearms and ammunition afield.

This knowledge is not something we're born with though. It must be taught. Otherwise, these shortcomings in knowledge far too often often translate into WOUNDED AND LOST animals or MISSED SHOTS on hunts.

It's not your fault though: a shockingly high proportion of the resources people turn to for information on firearms and ammunition spread misleading, out of date, or just plain wrong information.

Want expert recommendations on the best hunting rifle or shotgun?

#1: You Need Analytical Approach via The 5 Step Perfect Hunting Gun Framework

We're living in a literal golden age of firearms development and the average hunter has access to rifles, optics, and ammunition that are significantly better than what was available even 20-30 years ago.

My grandfather dedicated literally hundreds of hours of time and who knows how much money building and fine tuning what eventually became his favorite hunting rifle in the 1960s. He devoted the same attention to developing custom handloads for that same rifle.

His work really paid off and that rifle was extremely accurate, reliable, and effective afield. He ended up harvesting many, many deer with it, to include some very nice bucks taken at what were then considered pretty long ranges.

Well, there are a number of rifles that will meet or even exceed the performance of my grandfather's hunting rifle that you can pick off the shelf of a sporting goods store today. The same goes for optics and factory ammo.

That's the good news. The bad news is that there's a staggering variety of stuff to choose from these days.

When you're talking about potentially spending upwards of a thousand dollars on your hunting rifle set-up, you want to do it correctly from the beginning.

Not only will this save you money in the long run, but it's also the right thing to do as an ethical hunter.

For instance, a rifle set-up that works great for hunting whitetail deer might be terrible on bigger game like elk or moose. Heck, what's ideal for whitetail deer at short range on a hunt in Florida is not necessarily what you should use to hunt whitetail deer in more open country in places like Wyoming.

You owe it to yourself and to the game you're hunting to use the absolute best tool for the job.

The last thing any hunter wants to do is miss a shot at the moment of truth, or even worse, wound and lose the animal they're after. Unfortunately, you're really rolling the dice if you don't have a good education in practical ballistics and if you don't take an analytical approach from the beginning.

Fortunately, an analytical approach via The Perfect Hunting Gun Framework will help you develop a good foundation of knowledge and will help you choose a set-up that will kill the game you're after cleanly and quickly at all ethical shot presentations, angles, and ranges.

My grandfather took an analytical approach, applied it to his goals and the equipment available to him at the time, and was extremely successful.

You can get the same results he did if you take the same approach.

Luckily for you, it's now possible to do this without spending a ton of cash on extremely high end firearms and optics, without using really specialized and/or exotic cartridges, and without having to custom build your own rifle like he had to.

The key? You've just got to learn exactly how to implement and execute the 5 Step Perfect Hunting Gun Framework

More on that in a moment, because that's only the first of four critical facts.

#2: The Average Hunter Doesn't Know Much More Than You Do.

The average hunter online or at the shooting range usually has a pretty limited knowledge of firearms and ammunition and are very likely to unknowingly give you misleading, incomplete, or even completely wrong wrong information.

I'll bet that if you asked them for advice on what rifle to buy or what ammo to use for an upcoming hunt, your buddy or the random guy at the range will just tell you to use the gear he/she uses because that's the extent of their knowledge on the subject.

They might give you good advice, but there's also a pretty decent chance that you'll get information that's not helpful or that even hurts your odds of success afield.

This is because most hunters also lack a good foundation of knowledge on firearms and practical ballistics. So, this is a situation where "the blind are leading the blind."

For instance, have you ever heard anyone say something like:

You need a rifle with a longer barrel because rifles with longer barrels are more accurate.

Or ...

That bullet was traveling too fast and just zipped through the animal before it could expand.

Both of those statements are pure baloney, but they're taken as fact by a disturbingly large segment of the hunting community.

As you can probably imagine, basing your gear purchases on those myths is a recipe for disaster as well!

So, take everything you hear from your hunting buddies, from people at the range, in online forums and social media groups, and in similar places with a grain of salt.

Your fellow hunters and shooters are not trying to mislead you, but they're quite often giving bad advice just the same because they simply don't know any better.

Why?

Well, that brings me to my next point:

#3: Beware Of Hunting Media

While there are a handful of notable exceptions, this applies to most hunting TV shows, magazines, etc.

The ugly truth is that far too many hunting TV shows and magazines are just commercials for the products gun and ammo companies want to sell.

Think about it: how does hunting media make money? From advertisers and sponsors.

Who are those advertisers and sponsors? Yep: companies selling hunting gear, to include firearm, ammo, and optic manufacturers.

I'm not accusing anybody of intentionally trying to mislead the hunting public in an effort to sell more of their products. Instead, what often happens is that many articles and TV shows are just product placements for stuff their advertisers are trying to sell.

That gear is often indeed very useful, but that's not always the case. Even when they're selling something that actually works as advertised, it's not always something most hunters actually need. The end result is that most of hunting media is primarily focused on gear and equipment instead of knowledge.

This in turn gives hunters who simply don't know any better the impression that they NEED certain types of gear to be successful. Sometimes that's the case, but more often the gear doesn't make that much of a difference one way or another or may even HURT odds of success on certain hunts.

Additionally, many hunting TV show hosts don’t always know what they’re doing either and I've seen them say and do some things that make me cringe. Those myths I just mentioned about barrel length and bullets going "too fast to expand"? Well, they have been spread at one time or another by people who should know better, to include a few "hunting personalities" and "gun writers" with really big audiences.

Looking at most hunting media through a lens where they're entertaining hunting gear commercials instead of useful sources of information is a good idea for most hunters, especially the inexperienced.

Just like with the average hunter, sometimes you'll receive great advice and useful information from hunting media. I'd also like to reiterate that there are indeed a few authors and TV show hosts who are true experts and do great work educating other hunters.

However, there's also a whole lot of garbage out there that's either useless or will hurt your odds of success afield.

Unfortunately, it's really hard to sort the good stuff from the bad unless you have a really good foundation of knowledge in firearms and ballistics.

#4: Don't Try To Go It Alone

With all that in mind, don't waste hundreds of hours of your life and potentially thousands of dollars in guns, ammo, or failed hunts over the years by trying to learn this stuff by yourself or through traditional information sources.

Fortunately, learning a good foundation of practical ballistics isn't difficult if you go about learning this critical knowledge in the right way.

Learning things the right way up front is much faster, less painful, easier, and ultimately less expensive over the long run than trying to do this "on the cheap" by trying to sort through the mess of free resources found online and in traditional media.

It's also a heck of a lot more fun.

So, just do this the easy way from the start. You'll learn more, you'll learn more faster, and you'll gain critical knowledge while avoiding some painful lessons.

FOR THE SAVVY STUDENT:
A Serious Problem...
...and a Clever Solution:

So The Problem, Is:

- We know we need an analytical approach.
- We know the average hunter isn't much better off than we are.
- We know that traditional hunting media isn't always a reliable resource.
- We know that it's possible to do this on our own, but it's just harder and slower.

How can we get this education without making too many mistakes afield that result in wounded and lost game and/or wasted money on failed hunts that didn't need to happen?

....and how can we get this education from a reliable instructor, on our own schedule, and for a reasonable cost?

A Very Good Solution For You:

While I'm sure your Free E-Book and this web page will both be helpful to you even if you walk away now, I'm confident that I can help you improve your life in this area and help you take your hunting game to the next level.

I want to be your educator and your guide.

This is why I've worked hard developing what I have been told by many is one of the "the most reliable, fastest, easiest to digest tool for learning practical ballistics for hunters in the United States today."

Here's what I'd like to do for you:

I discovered your products while preparing for a hunt in Wyoming that my wife and I had planned for over a year. Neither of us had hunted elk or mule deer before, especially at the distances we anticipated. I learned an immense amount from you and you helped me choose which caliber, bullet and scope to use. We had tags for antelope, mule deer, and elk and were 100% successful in making one shot drops on all 4 animals, including a beautiful 381 yard shot my wife made across a windy canyon. It was a great vacation and the best hunt we ever had. Preparation was crucial and I honestly don’t think we would have been as successful had we not found you!

Matt A

I bought my first hunting rifle and scope based off your recommendations. Since then, I've used that rifle to shoot a several whitetail deer (including my first deer and my first buck!) as well as a few feral hogs. I shot this particular hog, which was my biggest ever, with that same rifle and it went less than 25 yards after the shot. What a rush!

Mark F

I didn't grow up hunting and had only recently gotten into hunting, but a friend invited me to go elk hunting in Wyoming with him. A buddy sent me a link to your site and I started researching elk hunting calibers and rifles. I eventually bought my rifle, scope, and ammo based upon your recommendations. That combo was a dream to shoot at the range and on my hunt, where I put 2 bullets through the vitals of my elk at 275 yards.

I HELPED THOSE HUNTERS FIND SUCCESS ON THEIR DREAM HUNTS AND I CAN HELP YOU TOO!

I'd love for you to be the next Hunter who uses this program to increase your knowledge of practical ballistics and punch your tag on your dream hunt!

What Is Hunting Guns 101, What's All Included, and How Does It Work?

The Hunting Guns 101 Course consists of five parts.
Part One: Determine What You Want To Accomplish With This Firearm.
In this module, you’ll learn:

• Why it’s important to begin with the end in mind and what that means when it comes to choosing a hunting rifle set-up.
• That there are trade-offs involved with every single aspect of firearm, cartridge, scope, and ammunition selection.
• A real world example of what those trade-offs look like.
• The pros and cons of buying a single, extremely versatile firearm vs buying several more specialized firearms.
• Examples of how recommended firearm performance can vary according to slightly different hunting situations and priorities.

Most importantly, you’ll have a good understanding of where you want to accomplish with your new firearm when you finish Part 1 that will serve as a good foundation for the remainder of the course.

When you’re finished with part one, you can move onto Part Two.
Part Two: Analyze The Game And Conditions Of Your Hunt.
In this module, you’ll learn:

• What sort of ballistic performance is required to cleanly and ethically harvest them some of the most popular species of big game in the world from whitetail deer all the way up to cape buffalo.
• How to analyze the environment you’ll be hunting in to ensure you’re using equipment that’s well suited to the area where you’ll be hunting: thick vs open, windy vs calm, rugged vs flat terrain, rainy vs sunny, etc.
• The importance of considering your hunting style (like hunting from a deer stand vs spot and hunting in extremely rugged terrain vs spot and stalking in wide open, but very flat county) when choosing a firearm set-up.
• A real world example of what can happen if you use inappropriate equipment on a hunt.
• The importance of considering your personal strengths, weaknesses, budget, and what you just think is cool when selecting a firearm.

When you are finished with Part Two, you’ll understand EXACTLY what sort of ballistic performance you’ll need out of your hunting rifle to cleanly take the game you’ll be hunting under the conditions you’ll be hunting under.
Part Three: Determine What Equipment is Legal To Use.
In this module, you’ll learn:

• The intent of hunting seasons and why different countries, states, and provinces regulate various firearm and ammunition characteristics.
• High level overview of the different firearm and ammunition characteristics that are commonly regulated.
• What the various minimum caliber requirements are for hunting different species of game from deer, to elk, to cape buffalo.
• What a straight-wall cartridge is, examples of common straight wall cartridges, and which states require hunters to use them.

This whole module is designed to teach you to evaluate firearms based on what you’ll actually need in reality instead of marketing gimmicks or appearance.

In this module, you'll learn:

• A real world example of how using a firearm that’s poorly suited for a hunt can dramatically reduce your odds of success afield.
• How to effectively evaluate firearms and their suitability for different hunting situations.
• How different firearm characteristics (like cartridge (caliber), barrel length, rifle weight, rifle finish, stock material, action type, etc.) affect rifle performance afield and the trade-offs involved with those different characteristics while hunting under different conditions.
• What cartridges are best suited for hunting different species of game like whitetail deer, mule deer, feral hogs, black bear, elk, moose, brown bear, and cape buffalo.
• Guidelines on which factors you should prioritize when selecting a firearm to hunt almost any species of game in the world and under almost any conditions.
• How rifle performance changes at different price points and the differences between rifles in the $300-800 range vs those in the $1,000-2,000 range.
• Specific rifle recommendations (and the pros and cons of each one) for those looking for an extremely versatile hunting rifle.
• This module also provides rifle recommendations (with a discussion of the pros and cons of each rifle) for those looking for a compact hunting rifle, rifles well suited for novice, small framed, and/or recoil shy hunters, a lightweight hunting rifle that still has good long range capability and is also well suited for use on bigger game, a hunting rifle that’s specifically designed to deliver the best possible performance at long range on all manner of big game, hunting rifles for those who are required to hunt with a rifle chambered in a straight wall cartridge, for those who are required to hunt with (or just prefer to use) a shotgun, and for those who want to hunt with a lever-action rifle.
• How to effectively evaluate scopes and iron sights and their suitability for different hunting situations.
• How different scope characteristics (like magnification, objective lens size, reticle type, accessories like custom turrets, etc.) affect performance afield and the trade-offs involved with those different characteristics while hunting under different conditions.
• Specific iron sight recommendations
• Specific scope recommendations at different price points and for different types of hunting.

By the time you finish Part Four, you will be an expert on how to choose the EXACT firearm you NEED for the type of hunting you plan on doing! In fact, you’ll know more about that stuff than 95% of the other hunters you talk to online, at the shooting range, and even the people behind the counter at gun stores.
Part Five: Selecting The Best Ammunition
Just like Part 4, this whole module is designed to teach you to evaluate ammunition based on what you’ll actually need in reality instead of marketing gimmicks or appearance.

In this module, you'll learn:

• A real world example of how using the wrong ammunition can lead to disaster on a hunt.
• The basics of practical ballistics for hunters.
• How bullets actually kill game.
• How to effectively evaluate ammunition and its suitability for different hunting situations.
• What certain commonly used “buzzwords” ammunition manufacturers use in their labeling actually mean with regards to their effectiveness and utility on game.
• Guidelines on which factors you should prioritize when selecting ammunition for hunting almost any species of game in the world and under almost any conditions.
• What bullet types and factory ammunition lines are best suited for hunting different species of game like whitetail deer, mule deer, feral hogs, black bear, elk, moose, brown bear, and cape buffalo.
• Specific bullet and ammunition recommendations for hunters who must use lead free ammo.
• Why some lever-action rifles sometimes require special ammunition for best performance and what ammo is best for those rifles.
• Specific low recoil ammo recommendations that are great for novice, small framed, and/or recoil shy hunters.
• Detailed description of the different types of shotgun ammunition and what lines are best for different types of hunting with a shotgun.

After you finish Part Five, you’ll have an outstanding foundation on ammunition selection, bullet performance, and practical ballistics. Once again, you’ll know a whole lot more about this stuff than the average hunter and be much better equipped to spot marketing gimmicks or misinformation spread by other hunters.
